Bio

Hi, there! My name is Alexa Brinkschulte and I would be excited to be your drum teacher. I’ve been teaching private lessons since 2004 and have helped 100+ students become better drummers. I strive to make my lessons fun yet productive. If you are a beginner, you’ll learn all the foundations for good drumming such as technique and rudiments….. while at the same time learning to play along to your favorite songs. If you are intermediate / advanced, we’ll identify which areas of your drumming can be improved to make you a more well rounded musician. I went to Berklee College of Music and earned a degree in Professional Music in 2004 (GPA 3.9). I also attended the L.A. Music Academy from 1998-99 (now Los Angeles College of Music). I’m a very patient and motivated teacher, and I’m great with kids and parents. I look forward to helping you (or your child) reach your drumming goals!

Alexa Brinkschulte was born in Bremen, Germany and didn’t start playing drums until the age of 17. Only two weeks after her first lesson, she started performing and recording with the local rock band“Noise of Destiny”. In the summer of 1999, Alexa was featured on German national television’s “Buten und Binnen” news program and in local newspapers as a young drummer with talent and ambitions. Shortly after, she moved to the United States to attend the Los Angeles Music Academy in Pasadena, CA followed by Berklee College of Music in Boston, CA, where she received her B.A. in Music with a GPA of 3.9.

While in school, she studied under the guidance of some of the world’s best drummers including Joe Pocaro, Ralph Humphrey, Mark Schulman, Mike Shapiro, Jamey Haddad, Dave DiCenso, Skip Hadden, and John “J.R.” Robinson, among others.

Since moving back to Los Angeles following her graduation from Berklee College of Music, Alexa has performed, toured and recorded with numerous bands and artists, such as: Kubist Hall, Sacha Sacket, Angela Peterson, William Close And the Earth Harp Collective, Seven Saturdays, Swimming in Trees, Gotaway Girl, Light FM, Saucy Monky, Willie’s Nerve Clinic, Idle Hands, The Undercover Club, Greg in Good Company, and many more. A few years ago, Alexa finished a 1-year contract with Fruit of the Loom/Vanity Fair who scoured the country to find talented female musicians for a marketing campaign featuring “The Vassarettes”- an all female rock band. This opportunity provided Alexa with nationwide exposure through print ads in magazines like Marie Claire, InStyle, and a TV appearance on Style Networks’ reality series “Running In Heels.”

Along with her numerous engagements as a performer, Alexa has been teaching drums privately for the past 14 years, which included a stint as a faculty member at California College of Music in Pasadena, CA.

Teaching Info

Playing Technique

Solid playing technique is the foundation on which all drumming is build. This includes correct stick and bass drum technique, note reading, rudiments, and more.

Music Styles

You will learn the fundamentals of a variety of music and drumming styles. Alexa specializes in Pop, Rock, Funk, and Blues, and can also teach you the basics of Jazz and Latin drumming.

Play Along to Songs

Apply what you are learning in your lessons by drumming along to your favorite songs. This will prepare you for real-life situations in current or future bands.

I was a beginner drummer looking to learn a new skill. Alexa was a patient and extremely talented teacher. I looked at many different individuals before choosing her. I was trying to find someone who was educated in music through formal schooling (To have a strong background in the fundamentals who could actually teach me as an absolute novice) as well as someone that is currently performing (who Rocks !). I have seen her perform a number of times and she is truly talented. I felt so comfortable with her as a teacher (and a person) I also had her teach my youngest son (who was 11 at the time). She never missed an appointment, and was always on time (very important for a drummer).
